Born in Turkey and raised amongst the ‘Sulukule Gypsies’, Sema Yıldız began dancing at only 14 years old, donning her first dance costume on stage at age 16. In 1973, she became a professional dancer. At a time before dancers were shown on Turkish television, Sema became famous performing in Istanbul's best-known locations including Galata Tower, Kervansaray, and Gar Music Hall and was a feature performer in the famous Turkish singer Zeki Muren's show at Maxim Music Hall.
Sema Yıldız is well-known as not only as dancer, she has also appeared in many films, television programs and daily newspaper serials. In addition, Sema has been featured in promotions for Turkish tourism and in foreign television advertisements.
Sema has danced at festivals in Syria, Iran, Egypt, Japan, Korea, Belgium, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Holland, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Denmark, and the Ukraine. In addition, she has toured Canada and the United States, teaching, performing and appearing on television. In 2012 and 2013 she helped co-ordinate Tarazade, the largest international belly dance festival in Istanbul.
Sema holds both Turkish and Belgian citizenship and specializes in Turkish Oriental and Roman dance. She currently performs and teaches worldwide.
